Singing Voice Cast
Back to Patron Library Index.
If you’ve read The Thread That Binds (Book1), you know that June and Aeronwy are both talented singers who use song in their magical and spiritual practice. This becomes even more important in The Tale That Twines, where they’re the main characters. Music is a huge part of their relationship from the moment they meet, and the story is filled with song lyrics as a result.
What do they sound like when they sing, though? Here’s my inspiration and interpretation! If you imagine their voices differently, that’s totally cool and valid, but I thought I’d share:
June
Primarily - Joni Mitchell
I’ve loved Joni Mitchell ever since I was a kid. Her voice sounds so genuine and natural, and her music is exactly the sort of thing June would listen to on repeat. It’s appropriate to the time period, too! Like most people, Blue (1968) is my favorite album of hers. I had several tracks from it on the Official Soundtrack playlist, but alas, she took her music off Spotify sometime in the last year, which is where I primarily make my playlists. Just imagine it’s there!
Alternately - Joan Shelley
Another good singing voice for June would be Joan Shelley, an artist I started listening to around the time I was writing Book 1 of the series. Her self-titled album from 2017 had a big influence on the songs I wrote for the books, and her voice is so beautiful and strong in a soft, folky way.
Aeronwy
Gene Kelley
I actually had a really hard time figuring out a singing voice for Aeronwy! Then I watched the classic film Singin’ in the Rain with some friends, and I was like, “Aha!!” Aeronwy is old fashioned and refined in a lot of ways, and is a classically trained singer. Gene Kelley’s tone and range are a good match. A lot of other crooner types I listened to sang a bit too low and were definitely too smarmy for Aeronwy, haha.
Contributing Inspiration - Allison Krauss
Aeronwy is intended to be a baritone and AMAB (in our world/society, obviously they don’t assign gender at birth in Caspora), but an artist I routinely think of when I imagine Aeronwy singing is Alison Krauss. Specifically, the sheer effortlessness with which she sings in her live performances. She just… opens her mouth and the sound comes out with so much STRENGTH and CLARITY, but she doesn’t appear to be belting it out the way an artist like, say, Adele does! That’s always left a lasting impression on me.
Duets
Even if they only contain one of my voice casts for the two, here are couple of songs I feel are a good match for Aeronwy and June when they sing together:
